How to Send Personalized Mass Emails on Gmail for Free

Gmail has no built-in feature that allows you to send personalized mass emails. It doesn’t mean that you can’t send a personalized mass emails on Gmail. In general, there are two ways to send a personalized mass emails on Gmail: using a desktop email client app or by taking advantage of add-on.

On the previous post we have covered how to send a personalized mass emails using Thunderbird. In this post we will show you how to send a personalized mass emails on Gmail via web. Since Gmail has no built-in feature to send a personalized mass emails, you need to install an add-on. One of the add-ons you can use is Yet Another Mail Merge (YAMM). This is an add-on for Google Sheets.

To send a personalized mass emails on Gmail, you need to prepare the database of the email addresses you want to send the email to on Google Sheets. The process of sending email is also done via Google Sheets. You only need to login to Gmail to write the email draft.

How to send a personalized mass emails on Gmail for free

First off, create a new blank spreadsheet file on Google Sheets. You can either create a new spreadsheet file via Google Drive or directly via the Google Sheets page. Once the worksheet opens, go to Add-ons -> Get add-ons.

On the Add-on page, select Yet Another Mail Merge and click the FREE button to install it to your Google Sheets.

As usual, you will need to give YAMM an authorization to access your Google Sheets data. Simply click the Allow button to continue.

Next, you will be asked to set the recipients. You can import the email addresses from your Google Contacts or enter them manually on Google Sheets. On this example we choose the second option.

YAMM will create a template of the spreadsheet file. There are 5 columns available on this template, but you can simplify it if you want. Following is template of the spreadsheet file.

In this example, we simplify the template by removing the Family Name and the Example columns.

Now, login to Gmail and write the email draft. On the To field, leave it empty. On the Subject field, write the email subject you want. On the email body, type {{Name}} on the parts where you want to mention the names of your recipients. Tailor Name with the first row on the recipient name column on your spreadsheet file.

Following is the example of the email body.

Return to your spreadsheet file on Google Sheets and go to Add-ons -> Yet Another Mail Merge -> Start Mail Merge.

YAMM is a freemium add-on. Free version is limited to 50 messages per day. Click the Continue button to continue.

Type your name on the Sender Name field and choose the draft you have written on the Email Template dropdown menu. Click the Send x emails button to send your email.

Once your email has been sent, you will see the status on the Merge status column on your spreadsheet file.

Final thoughts

Yet Another Mail Merge (YAMM) is a great Google Sheets add-on to send a personalized mass emails on Gmail. You can use it whether on the regular Google Sheets or Google Sheets on Google Apps. Make sure to login with the same Google account (on Gmail and Google Sheets) to use this add-on to send a personalized mass emails on Gmail.
