How to Change The Default Download Location on Chrome, Firefox, and Microsoft Edge

Every modern web browser has a built-in download manager that allows you to pause the running downloads, resume or cancel them. Typically, the download manager on a web browser stores the downloaded files on the “Downloads” directory on your system. You can change the default download location on your web browser in case you want to.

Google  Chrome, Firefox and Microsoft Edge have a different setting to change their respective download location. Following are how to change the default download location on those three web browsers.

1. How to change the default download location on Chrome

  • Open the Chrome main menu by clicking the three-dot icon on the top-right corner and select Settings.

  • On the Chrome Settings page, click the three-line icon on the top-left corner.

  • Click Advanced and select Downloads.

  • On the Downloads section within the Settings page, click the Change button and select your preferred folder. You can also create a new folder. Click OK once you are done.

2. How to change the default download location on Firefox

  • Open the Firefox menu by clicking the three-line icon on the top-right corner and select Options.

  • Scroll down your mouse to the Files and Applications section. On the Downloads section, click the Browse button on the Save files to option.

  • Select your preferred folder and click the Select Folder button.

3. How to change the default download location on Microsoft Edge

  • Open the Microsoft Edge menu by clicking the three-dot icon on the top-right corner and select Settings.

  • Scroll down your mouse to the Advanced settings section and click the View advanced settings button.

  • Click the Change button under the Downloads section

  • Select your preferred folder and click the Select Folder button.

All steps above were done on Windows, but they should also work on other platforms like Mac or Linux.
