In theory, you need Visio to open and edit a VSD or VSDX file because it is the default file format of Visio, a popular diagramming software from Microsoft. Some diagramming software are developed with a compatibility with both VSD and VSDX formats, allowing you to open or edit a VSD or VSDX file without Visio.
You can even open a VSD file without installing any diagramming software thanks to the existence of online diagramming tools like Lucidchart and Gliffy. Typically, they will convert the VSD/VSDX format into XML or other formats they support.

Hi Muhammad Rio! This is a great article:) I have tried Lucidchart and draw.io, which are quite convenient to create diagrams online. Now I’m using another free download diagramming tool Edraw Max because I need to draw diagrams offline. Edraw Max also allows me to open and edit vsdx or vsd files. The free trial version is free for me to view Visio files, but I have to upgrade to the full version if I want to make some changes with my files.
Hi, this statement from above is not correct. Draw.io will not open .vsd files, it will only open .vsdx files.
As of this date the version on the web will open VSD files but the PC version will not.
Thx for draw.io desktop!
It’s opening vsdx like a charm.
